Saving money is a never ending cycle. You have to constantly evaluate your expenditures, check your budgets consistently, and come up with new ways to save money. Have you ever had a recurring payment you’d forgotten about? I had a friend who’d paid a $10 monthly membership fee to a gym they hadn’t gone to in 3 years! That’s more than $350 for NOTHING! There are tons of ways to save money; I’ve shared some of our tips in my post about debt and how we paid off more than $30,000 in our first year of marriage. During the summer, you can feel like you’re hemorrhaging money. Here are 5 ways to save money that you can start doing right now!
DIY
This blog is mostly DIY projects – so it’s clear that I love to make and do myself. To me it’s not only fun and rewarding, it can save you a ton of money! Consider checking out Pinterest to find ways to save money. A gift you made yourself can be even more appreciated than a store bought one. Also consider cutting down on any services you contract out and do them yourself. We do our own house cleaning and maintain our lawn and garden; this saves us hundreds each month. I also love trying to recreate designer or high end projects like my Kate Spade Inspired Placemats and Ballard Designs Knock Off Headboard.
Reduce Expenses
One of my favorite housewarming gifts was a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat for our house. This handy gadget helps us maintain the temperature in our home – this is especially helpful in the summer when the temperature keeps rising. We can control the temperature in our home, even while we are away. That way our AC is not working hard all day to cool an empty house and we aren’t spending the money to do so! You should also check in with your insurance company regularly to ensure you aren’t overpaying for anything. We didn’t realize for a few months after we bought our house that our home insurance policy still had renter’s insurance on it from our apartment. We also cut our cable in favor of Netflix and Hulu.
Food
If your house is anything like ours, one of our largest expenses is FOOD. So much of our lives revolve around food and meal time. We go out to dinner with friends a lot and it’s hard to say no when you want to be social. Try cutting down on your restaurant bill by skipping drinks and splitting an entree – they are usually more than one serving size anyway! Have happy hour at home with friends instead of going out and get more bang for your buck. I try to bring my lunch to work each day and we eat at home as often as we can. Meal planning makes this much easier and saves us tons.
Entertainment
I’ve mentioned that we use Netflix and Hulu, so it’s no surprise we like to have date night at home and watch movies. Save money by having an at home movie night. If you do go out to the movies, skip the snack bar and save an easy $50! (Seriously, why are snacks at the theater SO EXPENSIVE?) I’ve also given up purchasing books in favor of borrowing from the library. Houston Public Library makes it super simple – I usually reserve online then pick up on my lunch break. All at no charge! I’ve also learned some awesome trips for traveling cheaply (internationally!) that I shared in this post.
Shop Smart
Whether I’m shopping in store or online – I always check for coupons and discounts. One place to check for those discounts is from Groupon Coupons. Some that I frequent are J. Crew Factory, Macy’s, and Nordstrom. Summer is usually a time for travel so be sure to check out coupons for Hotwire, Hotels.com and Hertz from Groupon Coupons!
