One of my favorite stores is the Dollar Tree. They have a lot of items I pick up frequently like cleaning products, gift wrap, and greeting cards. I almost always find a $1 item I can use for a craft project. On my last trip, I found a whole section of sun hats! I grabbed one and took it home to dress it up. With the upcoming 4th of July holiday, I decided to add some fireworks in the form of pom poms! It took all of 15 minutes to put this DIY pom pom sun hat together and now I’m ready for the holiday weekend!

DIY Pom Pom Sun Hat
The hat I found at Dollar Tree already had a white ribbon attached. I wanted something patriotic so I decided to add red, white, and blue pom poms to look like fireworks! I recycled the blue pom pom from my New Year’s wreath and made the red and white pom poms out of red/white baker’s twine. I’ve only made yarn pom poms in the past, but the process was the same for the twine poms. The twine is not stretchy at all so you’ll want to wrap it a bit looser than you would the yarn.
Cut a small piece of yarn or string (about 8 inches) and lay it between two finger.
Hold the end of the yarn between your ring finger and thumb. Then start wrapping.
Keep wrapping until you have a good amount on your fingers. The more you wrap, the fuller the yarn pom poms will be.
Snip the end of the yarn from the spool and pull up the piece of yarn that’s been resting between your fingers.
Gently slip the yarn ball off your fingers and pull the small piece of yarn tightly to knot it.
Holding the ball in the middle, slip the end of the scissors through the loop the yarn made and cut the edges.
Cut the other side then trim the edges.
You now have a yarn pom pom!
To attach the pom poms to the hat, I used a needle and thread to sew them on. I was able to knock out this project in less than 15 minutes and for a grand total of ONE DOLLAR! That’s my kinda project!
